Fastfetch easy mode

This is not a step-by-step reference, but a quick way to customize your Fastfetch to your liking. For a detailed configuration, see the manual page, fastfetch -h quick help, the threads on the forum, or the video tutorials on the internet.

Everything changes over time. If these steps stop working in the future, read the most up to date documentation first.

Run the following to see the paths Fastfetch searches for presets.

Terminal window
fastfetch --list-data-paths

On Garuda the presets are in /usr/share/fastfetch/presets/. The Dr460nized edition ships dr460nized.jsonc there.

Terminal window
ls /usr/share/fastfetch/presets/

Try a preset with fastfetch --config <preset>.jsonc, replacing <preset> with a file name from that folder.

  1. Copy a preset. The original guide uses dr460nized.jsonc as the base. Copy it to your home folder with a new name.

    Terminal window
    cp /usr/share/fastfetch/presets/dr460nized.jsonc ~/Documents/Myconfig.jsonc
  2. List the modules. Fastfetch lists all modules with the following command.

    Terminal window
    fastfetch --list-modules
  3. Edit the file. Open Myconfig.jsonc and look at the structure. Copy a block from { to the next },, paste it above, below or wherever you want, and follow the structure of the file. Change the module you want the block to show. You can remove blocks you do not want, including the icons and their pipelines. Copy and paste until it looks right.

Make only one change at a time and test it:

    Terminal window
    fastfetch -c ~/Documents/Myconfig.jsonc
  4. Change the logo. The logos are in /usr/share/icons/garuda/. You can also use a logo of your choice. The top of the file sets the logo path and its size. The default is 24. Increase it by 10 or 12 units or more for a bigger logo, or lower it if it looks too big.

  5. Create the user config. Fastfetch reads ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc by default. If you have never touched the configuration, the file does not exist. Create it with the following command.

    Terminal window
    fastfetch --gen-config
  6. Copy your config. Replace the contents of the user config with your Myconfig.jsonc. Then running fastfetch shows your chosen configuration.

    Terminal window
    cp ~/Documents/Myconfig.jsonc ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc
  7. Change the fish startup line. Garuda’s fish config calls __garuda_fastfetch at startup, which loads a preset from /usr/share/fastfetch/presets/. To show your own config every time you open a terminal, open ~/.config/fish/config.fish.

Replace the last line __garuda_fastfetch with the following. The old line fastfetch --config dr460nized.jsonc from the original guide no longer exists in the Garuda defaults.

    Terminal window
    fastfetch --config ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc

Keep this line at the bottom of the file. To hide the output, comment out the line.

This is the config from the original guide. It uses the dr460nized-start.png logo at a width of 48. The trailing comma before the closing ] was removed because it is not valid JSON.

The icons in the config are Nerd Font glyphs. The original guide inserted them with LibreOffice Writer. Open the Insert menu, choose Special Character, pick a font such as FiraCode Nerd Font, scroll to the icon you want, and copy it into your config.
