Play Epic games with Steam Remote Play Together

For anyone unaware, Remote Play Together allows you to use local multiplayer even if you are not on the same network. Only one user needs to own the game.

This should work for any game, whether through Heroic or not (e.g. Lutris, standalone).

  1. Install Heroic. The Dr460nized Gaming edition ships heroic-games-launcher-bin. If you use another edition, download Heroic from the Chaotic-AUR repository.

  2. Get Remote Play Detached. Use the RemotePlayDetached project. Either follow the guide on the GitHub page or continue with the steps below.

    • Install it from the AUR as remoteplaydetached-bin, or download the latest binary from the Releases section on the GitHub page.
    • Run the binary through VirusTotal before using it. You can also check the code and build it yourself if you have the time.
    • Put the file into some folder.
    • Make the file executable with chmod +x /path/to/RemotePlayDetached/binary.
  3. Find a donor game. Find a game on Steam that supports Remote Play Together. This becomes your “donor game”. You will not be able to play it conveniently, because starting it requires changing its launch options. Pick a game you do not play at all, or at least not often.

    • You might already have one. Go to your library, click “Advanced filtering options” above the list of games next to the search bar, and under Features select Remote Play Together.
    • Otherwise, search Steam for a free game that supports this feature and download it.
    • Make sure you are not using Proton or Wine for the donor game. Right click the game, open Properties, go to Compatibility, and uncheck the box.
  4. Edit the donor game launch options. Right click the donor game, open Preferences, then General. Add the following to the Launch Options:

    Terminal window
    /path/to/RemotePlayDetached/binary # %command%
  5. Launch Heroic through Remote Play Detached. Start the donor game. A window should pop up.

    • Click Import.

    • Fill out the name.

    • Set Game Path to /opt/Heroic/heroic. This is the path where the heroic-games-launcher-bin package installs Heroic.

    • Set Args to the following. This is required for the Steam Overlay, otherwise it will not show up. It is likely only needed for Heroic (solution on GitHub).

      ENABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1=1 LD_PRELOAD=~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so:~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so --no-sandbox
    • Click OK.

    • Click Run. You might need to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window.

  6. Launch the game. You can figure this out.

Select a Wine version in the game settings. Open Heroic, click the game, open settings in the top right, and select a Wine or Proton version. Check ProtonDB and the Heroic docs for more info.

Enjoy!
